In Florida, summer rainstorms are as reliable as mosquitoes and sunscreen. But instead of letting all that water run down your driveway and into the storm drain, why not put it to work for you?

That’s the magic of a rain barrel. It’s a simple, low-cost way to collect and reuse rainwater around your home. Whether you're watering your garden, potted plants, or lawn, a rain barrel can save you money every month by reducing your reliance on city water.

Why Use a Rain Barrel?

Let’s be real: water bills aren’t getting any cheaper. Lawn and garden irrigation can account for 30–60% of a household’s total water use in Florida. A single half-inch rainstorm on a 1,000-square-foot roof can fill a 300-gallon rain barrel and that's free water you can use instead of paying for it.

Rain barrels help you:

  • Save on your water bill
  • Stretch your irrigation during dry spells or watering restrictions
  • Make the most of the rain you’re already getting

Using a rain barrel also helps reduce stormwater runoff, which protects local waterways from pollution. But let’s be honest, the real thrill is watching your water bill shrink.

Join Us June 28th: Rain Barrel Workshop

Curious to learn more? Join us for a Rain Barrel Workshop on Friday, June 28 at 10:30 AM at the Dunedin Community Garden.  This event is free and open to the public. Come learn how rain barrels work, how to install one and tips for getting the most out of your barrel.

Please note: Barrels will only be distributed to pre-registered Dunedin residents (limited to 35 total). If you didn’t register in advance, you’re still welcome to attend the workshop and soak up the knowledge!

Parking reminder: The Community Garden is right next to the always-busy Eagle Scout Park, so on-site parking will be limited. We recommend parking at City Hall and using the FreeBee Dunedin Loop, a free local transportation service that loops around town.

Can’t Make the Workshop? DIY!

If you didn’t register or can’t make the event, don’t worry! Rain barrels are still within reach:

  • Pick up a free “How-To” booklet from Dunedin Solid Waste, with instructions on how to make your own.
  • Check local marketplaces like Facebook or Craigslist. Food-grade barrels are often listed for cheap (or even free).
  • Build your own with a DIY conversion kit from your local hardware or garden store.

There’s no need to wait for the next giveaway! Anyone can make a rain barrel and start saving.

Have questions or want more info? Check our our Rain Barrel Program page, reach out to Dunedin Public Services or swing by the workshop to learn more. Let’s make it rain, right into your garden.
