It's not very often that you hear the word "semi-quincentennial." If I'm honest with you, I'd never heard of it until recently, as we started preparations for this year's Independence Day festivities. This year will be extra special as America celebrates its 250th birthday (aka its semi-quincentennial)! With our own rich and deep history, Dunedin is the perfect place to kick off this historic Independence Day.
250 years is a long time, and it’s a good reminder of how much has changed and how much we’ve all been through together. Every city will be celebrating, but it holds extra significance here due to Dunedin’s own rich history and the way our community comes together.
This year's Independence Day event is shaping up to be one for the books. We welcome you to join us at TD Ballpark on Friday, July 3rd, starting at 6:00 pm. Whether you're bringing up the whole family, meeting up with neighbors, or simply looking for an excuse to get outside and soak up the summer, we have something planned for everyone. Starting with a golf cart parade that will wind its way through downtown and continue to TD Ballpark, the event will include a showing of the movie “Miracle on Ice” on the big screen, live music performed by “Something Major Band,” family-friendly activities such as mini golf, vintage truck display, a photobooth, and concessions. We’ll top off the evening with a fantastic fireworks display choreographed to music.
What makes an event like this special isn't just the fireworks or the festivities, it’s the feeling of standing shoulder to shoulder with your neighbors, enjoying time with family and friends, and remembering why days like this matter. Independence Day is a reminder of what we share as Americans and as a community.
For those of us who work in community programming, events like this are why we do what we do. Planning an event that brings people of all ages and backgrounds together on a day that already carries so much meaning is genuinely one of the privileges of this work. This year, with the added significance of the 250th anniversary, that feeling is amplified.
Mark your calendars, grab your lawn chairs, and make your way out to TD Ballpark, located at 373 Douglas Avenue, on Friday, July 3rd. We hope you’ll join us and be part of a memorable celebration for our City and Country. A semi-quincentennial (try saying that 5 times fast!) comes around once, and Dunedin plans to celebrate in style!
