Golf Cart Use in Dunedin

Golf carts are a popular way to get around Dunedin, and our community offers many opportunities to enjoy them safely. Recently, however, we have heard increased questions from residents about where golf carts are allowed and what to do when they see unsafe or illegal use.

To help clear up confusion, we are sharing important safety information and guidance from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

Golf Cart Safety Fast Facts

Here are a few key rules to keep in mind:

  • Golf cart drivers under the age of 18 are required to possess a valid driver’s license or learner’s permit. Drivers over the age of 18 must have a valid government issued photo ID.
  • Drivers must follow the rules of the road. Golf carts are subject to traffic laws, meaning operators can be ticketed for violations like failing to yield or running a stop sign. Driving under the influence (DUI) also applies to golf carts.
  • Children under 16 must wear a lap belt while the golf cart is in operation.
  • Where you can drive matters:
    • Only on roads with a posted speed limit of 30 mph or less
    • Crossing State or County roads is only allowed at designated, marked crossings
  • Where you cannot drive:
    • Sidewalks
    • The Pinellas Trail
    • Parks or other City property

These rules are in place to help keep everyone safe, including drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.

What Should You Do If You See Unsafe Use

We understand residents want to help keep the community safe but may not be sure what to do in the moment.

Here is the guidance from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office:

  • For non-emergency concerns such as underage drivers or golf carts being used on the Trail, call the non-emergency number at (727) 582-6200
  • For emergencies or active dangerous situations, call 911
  • Do not attempt to take photos or intervene. Deputies advise that calling while the activity is actively happening is the most effective way to respond

A Shared Responsibility

Safety in Dunedin is a shared effort. Education and awareness are just as important as enforcement, and small actions like following posted rules and reporting concerns appropriately can make a big difference.

Dunedin is proud to offer a community where residents can enjoy golf cart use responsibly. By working together, we can ensure it remains a safe and enjoyable option for everyone.
