With more people bicycling on our roads and trails, it's crucial that we all do our part to keep everyone safe. By following a few simple safety practices, we can ensure an enjoyable and accident-free experience for all riders and drivers.
Share the Road & Trails: Safety Tips
For Motorists:
- Pass bicyclists with care—Florida law requires at least three feet of space when passing.
- Always look for cyclists before opening your car door or pulling out of a parking space.
- Yield to bicyclists at intersections and follow all traffic signals and signs.
- Check for bicycles before making left or right turns.
- Respect bike lanes and trails—they're for riders, not for parking or passing.
- Never drive distracted or impaired. Always buckle up.
For Bicyclists:
- Ride in the same direction as traffic—you are considered a vehicle on the road.
- Obey traffic signs, signals, and lane markings and follow local laws.
- Stay predictable—ride in a straight line and use hand signals for turns and lane changes.
- Be aware—look ahead for traffic, pedestrians, and obstacles in your path.
- Be visible—use bike lights at night and in low-light conditions.
- Wear a helmet—it could save your life!
- Check your bike before every ride—make sure your brakes, tires, and seat are in good condition.
- Stay focused—never ride distracted or impaired.
